Phase 2 of the five-year Foster Avenue Greenway Project was completed on Saturday, Nov. 1. Â And Foster Avenue is looking pretty spiffy!!
In the days preceding the Phase 2 work day, significant prep was required. For example, concrete in some of the tree pits had to be broken up and removed. Hard-as-a-rock soil was softened and loosened.
The prep work paid off:
Nine tree guards were added; two to the Phase 1 block between Ocean and E21, and seven to the Phase 2 block.
More than 200 natives and evergreen perennials were planted on both blocks.
The new plants include a black chokecherry shrub, evergreen perennials such as Epimedium aka Barrenwort, Liriope, Yucca.
Approximately 120 native wildflowers that were sprouted in milk jugs and nurtured through the hot summer months. Â
After the planting was completed, six cubic yards of arborist mulch was spread on the beds from Ocean to E22. Â Tree pits that will be the focus of Phase 3 in 2026 benefited from the leftover mulch.
The project relies completely on volunteers and partners. This year, 16 Pollinators gave more than 160 hours of their time, an amazing expansion from 72 volunteer hours last year. We benefited from funding by the City Gardens Club of New York City (CGCNYC) and also received inkind support by NYC Parks, which provided the mulch; DSNY, which provided compost; bulbs from the NYC Daffodil Project; Â and Pollinator Caudel Knight, who provided garden soil.
Stay tuned for Foster Avenue Greenway Phase 3 in Autumn 2026!
