Nature Comes to Foster Ave

These happy scenes are a far cry from the litter and dog waste that has long populated the tree beds of this very busy transit and pedestrian thoroughfare.
Now in the third year of its multi-year project, the South Midwood Pollinators' Foster Avenue Greenway is coming into its own, with evergreen plantings and homegrown perennial wildflowers in the tree beds from Ocean Avenue to E 23rd Street.
Guided by the principal that every child deserves a little nature on their block, volunteers have built tree guards, enriched the soil, planted, mulched and watered resilient plants that are now looking at home on this once blighted street used by hundreds of Brooklynites every day.
Challenges remain but this project clearly shows that persistence pays and that nature has a place on our streets, as well as in our parks. As we say in the Pollinators, onward and upward.
